Serena Software recently concluded a study on the current state of agile software development. The research focussed on what is working with regards to agile development methodology, the extent of agile adoption in enterprise IT organisations today, biggest challenges and more. The key findings revealed that development teams have united on agile practices, but lack the communication with customers, operations and other development teams, which slow projects and agile success.
Highlights from the study include:
- Agile is doing well, but could do better – 49% of respondents say their company is doing some agile deployment work, but only 52% of these have fed back that they are ‘happy’ or ‘very happy’ with their current agile projects.
- Today’s biggest agile challenge is communication – both managers and developers agreed that four of the top five barriers to agile involved working with other teams and customers.
- Stakeholders need to be move involved with new release projects – when it comes to sprints, the survey revealed that upstream and downstream stakeholders are being left out of the communication loop. IT Operations and Support are involved with less than 40% of release plans, despite being first in line to respond.
